Miss American Pie was third this afternoon at Finger Lakes and was claimed by owner/trainer Ilmar Loaiza. Click for the result chart.

Flat-footed early and working hard to make up ground, she started to advance into the turn and was in third heading for home. She still had a lot of work to do to catch the leader as they straightened, however, and just couldn’t quicken as she needed to from there.

On paper, she should have been able to handle today’s field pretty easily, but she just has not developed into the horse we hoped she would. As always, our team will keep close tabs on Miss American Pie moving forward.

Trainer Christophe Clement sadly passed away last night after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Click here to read a statement he prepared before his passing.

This is obviously a very delicate situation and, first and foremost, we will give Christophe’s family and team time and space to sort everything out. Christophe’s son and assistant Miguel had already begun taking over most aspects of the business and will continue to operate the Clement stable moving forward.

For now, our horses will remain in excellent care with Team Clement. We will be back with more to report when we have additional information.

Anyone who has followed racing for the last few decades knows what an incredible horseman Mr. Clement was. He was a pleasure to work with and our hearts go out to those closest to him.

Miss American Pie reportedly came back in good order yesterday’s race. She did lose a front shoe, which definitely could’ve impacted her finish some. She scoped clean. Assistant trainer Miguel Clement also thought turf might be worth a try, so that’s likely what we’ll look to do next.

The Clement barn reports that Miss American Pie exited yesterday’s debut sound and in good order. She earned a 57 Beyer Speed Figure–about what we would’ve expected for a New York-bred filly who finished where she did. The subsequent NYB dirt sprint MSWs for what will be 3-year-old fillies come up a bit quick in the next condition book, but we’ll let Team Clement see how she trains in the coming weeks and make that determination. The most realistic date of what’s currently available would be Jan. 18, but again, that may be a bit soon.
