Seize the Grey Update

Gainesway recently shared with us some more information on how Seize the Grey’s first breeding season went.
In all, he was bred to 196 mares, with 174 reported in foal—that’s an 89% in-foal rate, which is considered very good.
The average stud fee per contract was $29,500 (it’s standard/common in the industry for breeders to sometimes negotiate slight discounts on the advertised stud fee, particularly for mares who are most appealing to add to the stallion’s book). The vast majority of those contracts were under stands and nurses terms—which is also standard—so stud fees will not be due on those foals until 2026 when they are born (owners of mares who are sold in foal this year will generally have to pay those stud fees before the mare is sold). Note that some of those breedings were also done on stallion share seasons for which stud fees will not be due.
Some of the long list of noteworthy mares that Seize the Grey was bred to include:
- Accommodate Eva (Munnings), a fresh-off-the-track multiple stakes-winning earner of $211K
- Athenian Beauty (Corinthian), dam of this year’s G3 Southwest S. winner Speed King
- Chubby Star (Malibu Moon), the stakes-placed dam of MRH Seize the Grey Broodmare Band member Natural Beauty
- The previously mentioned two-time champion female sprinter and $6-million seller Goodnight Olive
- Lady Pewitt (Orientate), dam of champion 2-year-old filly Jaywalk (by Unbridled’s Song stallion Cross Traffic)
- Marilyn Monroan (Tapit), dam of $1.7-million earner and MGSW Somelikeithotbrown
- Quickest (Forest Wildcat), dam of Grade 1 winner Callback and two other stakes horses
- Reachfortheheavens (Pulpit), dam of MG1SW Real Solution and two other stakes horses
The catalog for the Keeneland November sale typically comes out around Oct. 1, so it’ll be interesting to see which mares in foal to Seize the Grey will be entered there and then of course see how the market receives them the following month.
